Every patient’s needs are unique, and treatments for depression should be tailored to those needs. While many people with depression notice a difference with medication and therapy, some may be interested in exploring additional treatment options. TMS therapy is a noninvasive option that uses magnetic fields similar to those found in an MRI to change a patient’s brain chemistry.
Since 2018, we have been committed to helping each patient find the TMS treatment plan that best meets their needs. Schedule a consultation with us today to learn more about TMS therapy in Georgetown.
To be eligible for TMS therapy, you must meet certain requirements. It may be a good fit for Georgetown patients if they are:
TMS therapy may not be the best option for patients with a metal implant, seizure disorders, or severe mental health conditions.
Our providers at Cedar Park TMS will discuss your symptoms, medical history, and previous treatments to determine if this procedure will be beneficial. We are here to support you during this time.
The goal of TMS therapy is to ensure neurotransmitters in your brain are at a healthy level. This is done by introducing magnetic fields to your brain’s left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for mood regulation. Once introduced into the brain, the magnetic fields activate cells that release neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, norepinephrine, and serotonin.
In some patients, depression may be the result of an imbalance of these neurotransmitters. Ensuring that Georgetown patients are at a healthy level through TMS therapy may relieve symptoms that have not responded to other treatments, such as antidepressants.
Many Georgetown patients enjoy a variety of benefits as a result of TMS therapy. The procedure often lessens or alleviates symptoms of depression, helping you get back to what you enjoy. Since it is an outpatient treatment that does not require sedation, you will be able to continue with your regular routine. Pain relievers or additional medications are not necessary, and the procedure is not addictive or habit-forming.
Our Georgetown providers will explain each step of the TMS therapy so you know what to expect during your treatments. During your session, you are seated as your provider places a magnetic treatment coil against the left side of your head. You may feel a tapping sensation as your nerves are stimulated, but the procedure should be tolerable.
A typical course of TMS therapy includes 36 sessions completed over a nine-week period. Sessions typically last about five minutes, and patients will be in and out of our office in less than 15 minutes. Most patients undergo sessions five times a week for six weeks, and then twice weekly for three weeks. Your care team will discuss what duration of TMS therapy will work best for you prior to the start of your treatment.
Depression can make it difficult to fully engage in all aspects of your life, but the proper treatment can make a difference. If you are experiencing symptoms of depression that have not been alleviated with your previous treatment attempts, TMS therapy may be a beneficial option.
Cedar Park TMS is here to support you throughout your care journey. We will partner with you to discuss your symptoms and determine what treatment will be best for your unique needs. Schedule a consultation today to learn more about TMS therapy in Georgetown.
