Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

Extreme mood swings between mania and depression primarily characterize bipolar disorder. While mania can present as a burst of energy, it can also manifest as agitation. It also involves a distorted sense of well-being and reduced need for sleep. Manic episodes include periods of poor decision-making, leading you to engage in more risk-taking behaviors.

On the other end of the mood scale is the major depressive episode that follows periods of mania and hypermania. This depression can make it difficult for you to engage in your daily activities, which may impact your education or your career. A major depressive episode has many symptoms, including losing interest in the activities you usually enjoy, sleeping too much, feeling worthless, and experiencing suicidal ideation. These feelings are serious and warrant proper treatment. Reach out to our office in the Austin area today and get help with bipolar disorder treatment.

Treating Bipolar Disorder

Finding the right treatment plan for bipolar disorder will enable you to live a fuller life in Austin. A combination of treatment options is often the best choice, with each element building on and supporting the other to help you be the best you can be.

Medication

As with many health concerns, medication is a key treatment option. There are many medications that could help balance your mood. You may have to try several medications before finding the one that works best for you, whether it is a mood stabilizer, antipsychotic, antidepressant, antianxiety, or a combination of these medications. While you may want to switch some medications due to side effects, others may not prove effective for you and your needs. To get the best results, it is essential to inform your doctor about your response to the prescribed medications.

Talk Therapy

Known as psychotherapy, talk therapy comes in several forms and can be provided to individuals, families, or groups. You may consider cognitive behavior therapy, as it helps identify the unhealthy and harmful behaviors and beliefs you may be experiencing. It also helps you learn how to replace them with healthy, positive behaviors and beliefs. Interpersonal and social rhythm therapy can help you build stabilizing daily rhythms and routines that can help you manage your mood. Family-focused therapy provides family support and communication to help you stay on your treatment plan. This therapy also helps your loved ones understand your experience and determine how they can help you.

Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Therapy

Transcranial magnetic stimulation therapy uses magnetic stimulation to activate specific targeted regions of the brain. It is a non-invasive procedure that can help build and stimulate neural networks in the mood centers of the brain, providing relief from depressive symptoms. Cedar Park TMS is proud to have been the first to bring TMS to this area, offering the treatment since 2018.

We will work closely with you to determine the right treatment plan based on your symptoms, lifestyle, and personal needs.
