Few treatments in mental health history have been as exciting as transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) therapy. Where did TMS therapy originate, and how did it become so popular with people suffering from depression and other mental health issues? At Cedar Park TMS, we first started offering TMS therapy in 2018. We are your local, hometown provider, and we want to share with you the history of TMS therapy and how it is changing lives right here in our own backyard.

TMS in the Early Days

The development of TMS therapy spans several decades, beginning in the 1980s when researchers looked at how magnetic fields might affect brain activity. Dr. Anthony Barker and his team pioneered this therapy and created the first TMS device in 1985. They hoped to develop a non-invasive means of stimulating neurons to see how it might treat neurological and psychiatric conditions.

In the 1990s, studies began yielding promising results. These findings showed that TMS therapy can safely target areas of the brain associated with mood regulation and prompted additional clinical trials. In the early 2000s, TMS therapy became popular as a treatment for depression. In 2008, the FDA cleared TMS therapy for treatment-resistant depression.

Research into TMS therapy has developed over time. Scientists refined techniques to increase effectiveness and reduce side effects, making the treatment more accessible and useful. Today, TMS therapy treats anxiety, OCD, and PTSD, among other mental health conditions, and offers hope to those who have not found relief with medication alone.

The Future of TMS Therapy

Now that you understand the history of TMS treatment, let us look at its future. TMS continues to evolve, and new research shows it could effectively treat other conditions. The increasing evidence supports TMS therapy as a viable option for treating chronic pain and addiction, opening up new possibilities in mental health. One promising development is accelerated TMS, which involves delivering more than one treatment in a day and may lead to a faster response time.

At Cedar Park TMS, we are at the forefront of these innovations in therapy while focusing on what really matters: compassionate and individualized care for our patients.
